A Calculator For All Reasons

June 17, 2015

The Small But Mighty Calculator

Calculator - a small, portable electronic device used to perform mathematical functions. Many believe the calculator is a modern invention, but that is far from true. In fact, today’s versatile, hand-held calculator is the descendant of a long line of counting devices. From the abacus, developed over 2000 years ago, to the mechanical calculator of the 17th century, to the modern push button devices of today, the calculator has been an invaluable companion in our quest for mathematical excellence.

Throughout history, the ability to add and subtract quickly and accurately has governed our interactions in the marketplace. If, as they say, necessity is the mother of invention, the progression from primitive counting devices to today’s job-specific, pocket sized mathematical powerhouse was an inevitable evolution.

The incredible speed of the calculator is the result of intricate electrical interaction. The integrated circuitry of every calculator consists of sensors which send and transistors which receive electrical impulses when the buttons are pressed. This input is deciphered as binary, a “language” of 0’s and 1’s. Once the calculator formulates an answer, binary turns on a series of lines or pixels to create decimal (base 10), which produces visual numbers that we can recognize.

A Calculator For All Reasons

In our tech savvy world, purpose dictates programming. Although the basic operational principles for all calculators are the same, specific tasks require specialized functions. Modern calculators are now defined by their use in fields as diverse as science, business, and academia.

A basic keypad calculator is used for simple math, like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Limited memory functions are also available on the basic model.

The scientific calculator, a modern version of the slide rule, is designed to calculate the complex scientific formulas of chemistry and physics. It is also a valuable tool in areas of advanced mathematics like trigonometric logarithms and exponential equations. These calculators are programmable and some have the capability to transfer data from one calculator to another.

Graphing calculators are typically used in the fields of science, engineering, and education. They are especially useful in situations involving variables, like graph plotting and simultaneous equations. In a laboratory setting, graphing calculators can be attached to sensitive instruments, like electric thermometers and light meters, to monitor and log data. Graphing calculators are exceptionally user friendly and are easily programmable for gaming purposes. Many offer color displays and feature animated, interactive 2D and 3D drawing capability for functions like math plotting.

Financial calculators, also called business calculators, are designed with stand alone keys specific to commercial finance. These calculators are used in the preparation of mortgage, auto, and personal loans. They are also widely used in determining investment, retirement, and tax projections.

Calculator Conclusions

It’s been over half a century since the introduction of the first all-electronic desktop calculator in 1962 and calculators remain an invaluable aide in the determination of mathematical conclusions.  In fact, the ability to calculate is so important that even today’s most advanced computers, PDAs (personal data assistants), and smartphones are often equipped with calculator utility programs.

Modern calculators have become smaller, smarter, and more diverse. The future will surely demand accurate, job specific, mathematical solutions. The versatile calculator will continue to evolve to meet that challenge.
