Using Graphing Calculators on the SAT & ACT is Permitted with Exceptions

Students taking the SAT and ACT tests are permitted to use graphing calculators, scientific calculators and basic four function calculators. There are restrictions on the use of graphing calculators, however.  Calculators are only allowed to be used during the Mathematics portion of the exams. The remainder of testing is to be completed without a calculator. During these other exams, calculators must be turned off and put away.

Prohibited Calculators

The following calculators are prohibited from use during the SAT and ACT test:

  • Calculators with built-in CAS (Computer Algebra Systems) are prohibited on the ACT but not the SAT

Calculators within this category include Texas Instruments: All model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 and the TI-Nspire CAS—Note: The TI-Nspire (non-CAS) is permitted, Hewlett-Packard: HP 48GII and all model numbers that begin with HP 40G, HP 49G, or HP 50G & Casio: Algebra fx 2.0, ClassPad 300 and ClassPad 330, and all model numbers that begin with CFX-9970G

  • Handheld, tablet or laptop computers including PDA’s
  • Calculators with QWERTY keyboards – non-QWERTY keypads are acceptable
  • Cell phone calculators
  • Calculators that make noise, require electrical cords or have paper tape
  • Calculators with electronic writing pads or pen-input/stylus devices

Some other things to keep in mind if you are going to be using a graphing calculator on the SAT or ACT tests:

  • Make sure your calculator has good batteries
  • Take a back up calculator
  • Remove all power cords
